Domain growth and coarsening inhibition in a nonpotential system

چکیده
We present a study of interface dynamics in two spatial dimensions for a nonrelaxational system that describes the temporal evolution of three competing real fields. This and similar models have been used to obtain insight into problems such as Rayleigh–Bénard convection in a rotating cell or population competition dynamics in predator-key systems. A notable feature is that the nonpotential dynamics stops the coarsening process as long as the system size is large enough. For certain values of the parameters, the system switches to a chaotic dynamical state known as the Küppers–Lortz (KL) instability. When isotropic spatial derivatives are used, the intrinsic period of the KL instability diverges with time. On the contrary, anisotropic derivatives stabilize the KL period. 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Domain growth in a multivariable nonpotential system
We present a study of dynamical scaling and domain growth in a nonpotential system that models Rayleigh–B enard convection in a rotating cell. In d=1, dynamical scaling holds, but the nonpotential terms modify the characteristic growth law with a crossover from logarithmic to linear in time. In d=2 the nonpotential terms prevent coarsening for values of the angular rotation speed below the K u...

The growth of domains of stripes evolving from random initial conditions is studied in numerical simulations of models of systems far from equilibrium such as Rayleigh-Benard convection. The size of the domains deduced from the inverse width of the Fourier spectrum is found to scale as t 1/5 for both potential and nonpotential models. The morphology of the domains and the defect structures are ...
متن کاملCoarsening in potential and nonpotential models of oblique stripe patterns.
We study the coarsening of two-dimensional oblique stripe patterns by numerically solving potential and nonpotential anisotropic Swift-Hohenberg equations. Close to onset, all models exhibit isotropic coarsening with a single characteristic length scale growing in time as t1/2. Further from onset, the characteristic lengths along the preferred directions x and ŷ grow with different exponents, c...
متن کاملGrain boundary dynamics in stripe phases of nonpotential systems.
We describe numerical solutions of two nonpotential models of pattern formation in nonequilibrium systems to address the motion and decay of grain boundaries separating domains of stripe configurations of different orientations. We first address wave-number selection because of the boundary, and possible decay modes when the periodicity of the stripe phases is different from the selected wave n...
متن کاملGrowth dynamics of domains in ternary fluid vesicles.
We have studied the growth dynamics of domains on ternary fluid vesicles composed of saturated (dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine), unsaturated (dioleoylphosphatidylcholine) phosphatidylcholine lipids, and cholesterol using a fluorescence microscopy. The domain coarsening processes are classified into two types: normal coarsening and trapped coarsening. For the normal coarsening, the domains havin...
